The Growing Stash

Oops! The stash is supposed to be shrinking, right? I have an excuse. I always will! Late last week I learned I need to make a purple/blue/red quilt. It also needed some background fabric. I hastily went through my stash and nothing jumped out at me. I was feeling rushed so I talked Vince into driving up to to the quilt shop with me Saturday. There wasn't anything there that really thrilled me but I had to make this quilt. I bought fabric, knowing that it looked way too "red hat". The blue was more of a violet so I ended up with red, pale purple and violet. The background was from the red hat line . . ecru, red, purple and violet. By Monday, I knew that combination was not going to work. Once again, I began digging through the stash. I could almost get the combination I wanted using batiks so I got online and ordered fabric from Big Horn. Because it is hard to be sure about the colors, I ordered a couple of reds, and a purple (maybe two) . . 3 yards of each! The thought kept occuring that there had to be something in the stash that would work. I began to dig more and came up with this combination. I've actually added about 20 yards to the stash that I didn't need to add. Lesson learned: Don't panic and rush out and buy fabric til I am positively sure there isn't something here that will work.

  • Think of it as a Christmas present to yourself. Now you'll have lots of reds and purples to choose from in your stash!

I understand and am smiling away at your story of panic spending...

    Have a Merry Christmas

  • Things like that happen...and there is not evidence that you won't use the fabric, you just have abit more to use. I think you did good! Especially coming on the heels of Specks injury. You've made so much progress on stash reduction, at least there was room for the new stuff, right??*VBS* Have a merry Christmas and then off we into the new year!

  • Judy, it happens to all of us. Fortunately you are a person who actually uses your stash and has plans to use more. A few (or 20) yards isn't so bad! Just think, you'll have enough to do a border or binding on another quilt. Consider it an investment in your future! :o) Merry Christmas!

  • LOL! I had a stash enhancing experience recently too. But my "no new fabric" was for 2006 so I was legal in my purchases.

Also I have to say in response to a previous post. PLEASE don't let the comments of a few keep you from posting pictures. I love to see all that you get done and wish I had the time to be as productive. One day maybe but as long as I have to continue with my full time job I'll just muddle along at my snails pace and enjoy all the eye candy you post. I love all your teachers quilts. Especially the Barn Raising Stars. Another of my UFOs is that pattern in Red, White, and Blue. Since it was started for David and he's making noises about wanting a new quilt I guess I'd better pull it out and finish it.

    Merry Christmas, my friend.

  • Boy doesn't that story sound familiar..... Why exactly did you "need" to make a red hat quilt? (Sorry that combo is only Red Hat in my book!) My excuse it that I need it to be scrappy... So I would have bouth the same amount only in 1/2 yard pieces.....

Now you challenge is to make something with those fabric that did not work.... (You don't have to use all 20 yards...)
