More Changes to the Quilt

Ughhh! A costly change since it's going to take time and since I'm short on the background fabric but after making a few of the border blocks (12 to be exact), I decided they're too big for the quilt. The border blocks on the right are 6" x 8". The border blocks on top are 4-1/2" x 6" and they're much better. Don't you think? I'll take the bigger blocks apart and cut them down so as not to have to waste any fabric. I am not sure I've ever done that but with no background fabric to spare, I have no choice. And, the inner borders have to come off because instead of a 1-1/2" side border, I now need 3-1/2" side borders. And, the top and bottom borders were 2-1/2" and they now need to be 1-1/2". I'll use the current side borders for the top and bottom borders . . what a waste of time but I think the end result is better. But first, I think I'll take a nap. I stayed up too late last night and knew I had to get up at 6:30 but . . little did I know the neighbors are getting a new roof and the roofers began removing the old shingles at 5:20 a.m. Oh well, if they were working on my roof, I'd want it done as quickly as possible and if I were the roofers, I'd surely want to start before it got too hot so I can't complain.   • How discouraging- hope you can manage in spite of being a bit short of background.It must be that kind of weekend. I made a stupid mistake yesterday and had to rip out half a row of quilting - and I had been doing so well until then! Maybe we need a change of scenery, or fresh air. Excuse me while I go cuddle some purple fabric for a while.......

  • The smaller border definately looks better. It's going to be a wonderful quilt so it is worth the extra work :) Good job!

  • I'm sorry you are having so much trouble, but the final quilt will be so beautiful and worth all the extra effort. And I agree that the smaller border is better.

  • It is best to make the changes you want to make while you still have a chance then always saying "I should've" when it is all done. The quilt is going to turn out great.

  • I love this new quilt you are working on! The colours are gorgeous and your piecing is flawless. Thanks for sharing the "process" with us. It is nice to see some of the issues that other quilters experience and how they solve them.

  • Yes, I like the smaller border blocks. But what a shame you have to really scrimp and re-work to save that precious fabric. Is is a Moda Marble? Seems to me I ran short of that one time on a quilt I was doing. Maybe if you told us what it was, we could help you out if we had it? But it's worth making the quilt how you like it. It's not fun for sure, but in the end, you won't regret doing it over. Hmm, seems like deja vu for me! :)

  • You sound like me.....I'd rather rip and have things the way I want them, rather than settling! This is a very pretty quilt and well worth the extra effort you are going thru to get it done. Do you have big plans for this one, or is it just one that "had" to be done? I like both borders, so I'm no help there!

  • THe smaller border looks much better. Too bad it's so much work to get it right but it's worth it in the end. I hope you have enough fabric but you seem to be pretty good at moving things around to save fabric.

  • you were right about the border proportions--smaller is better. The fact that you have no extra fabric to fall back on has turned this into a harder project than it normally would be but as you said, the larger one can be selvaged and cut down to get out the pieces you need--going in the opposite direction needing it larger would not have. One more error and you will have to call this the "oops quilt" or something

  • Smaller looks a bit more proportional, sorry you discovered this too late. Can you un-piece and save some of the fabric?

  • I do like the smaller border better. Designing as you go definitely can be more work but isn't it more satisfying to create your own quilts and ending up with something unique?
